A Sad Report
Hello Everyone,
Some very bad news has come in for Don Miller's family, friends and colleagues. Don died on Sunday, April 13th. He had struggled valiantly with pancreatic cancer.
I have known Don for over 25 years. He was always ready to pitch in, whatever the activity was -- MAA, SIAM, the MCM -- and he was especially active in our SIG. He was one of the original seven of us who hatched the concept of an Environ Math SIG in New Orleans. Moreover, as Associate Coordinator, he did the most work in developing our EM SIG Charter and shepherding it through its various incarnations.
Don was essential to the success of our EM SIG field trips -- even driving a van on one occasion. He triaged student MathFest papers, helped organize and judge the papers, and was present at the MAA-PME awards for the student papers. Many of you are familiar with his activities. There is one activity you might not know about.
Don ran a workshop at St Mary's College for teachers every summer in such topics as Actuary Math., Statistics, and other fields of application. In the late 1980's, when the term "Environmental Mathematics" had barely appeared in print, he invited me to give a workshop with that title. It was a risky venture on his part, and the workshop barely squeaked past the audience. (It taught me a great deal about how much one could get away with in presenting unconventional materials to our colleagues!)
Best regards to everyone,
Ben
